Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Portland OR
231 PM PDT Sat Jun 28 2025

.SYNOPSIS...A warm and dry weekend continues, with temperatures
climbing steadily into early next week. The hottest day is
expected to be Monday, when many spots across the interior
valley could reach the low 90s. After that, temperatures cool a
bit but remain on the warmer side. We are also watching for a
slight chance of thunderstorms over the Oregon Cascades Monday
and Tuesday.

&&

.DISCUSSION...Now through Saturday...Dry conditions and
increasing temps are expected for the latter half of the weekend
and into early next week. Zonal flow across the PacNW will
amplify as high pressure over the dessert Southwest is pinched
on the western edge, increasing the strength of the ridge over
the region. Sunday highs across inland locations are expected to
rise into the upper 80s to low 90s. Cooler air near the surface
and a bit of onshore breeze should keep spots along the coast
and higher terrain more comfortable in the mid 70s.

Monday looks to be the peak of the heat, with widespread highs
in the low to mid 90s expected across the inland valleys. Peak
heat will coincide with easterly downslope flow on the western
portion of the Cascades. Downslope flow isn`t expected to be
strong enough to cross the coast range and affect the coastal
temps as temps remain mild in the mid 70s. The probabilities for
locations throughout the Willamette Valley to reach 95 or
greater on Monday are 40-80%. No headlines are expected with
this relatively short burst of heat though conditions may be
uncomfortable to some, especially for those without access to
cooling.

There is also a 15-20% chance of isolated thunderstorms over
the Oregon Cascades Monday afternoon and evening, especially
from Lane County southward. A weak system off the California
coast is helping to draw moisture into the mid-levels, which
could support storm development in terrain-favored areas.
Ensemble guidance supports modest instability, particularly in
the central Oregon Cascades. If that moisture tracks farther
north, there could be some activity closer to Mount Hood, but
confidence is lower for that scenario. By Tuesday, thunderstorms
chances remain, but activity looks less widespread and less
organized.

After Monday, temperatures dip slightly but stay above average.
Highs for the middle of next week will likely hover in the low
to mid 80s for much of the Willamette Valley, while overnight
lows will stay mild, mainly in the 50s. Ensemble clusters
generally agree on maintaining a warmer-than-normal pattern into
late week, though any significant cooling appears unlikely
through at least Friday. -Batz/Hall

.AVIATION...Lingering stratus from earlier this morning is now
beginning to scatter out across northwest Oregon and southwest
Washington this afternoon. High pressure will maintain
predominately VFR conditions with mostly clear skies through the
TAF period. A 15-30% chance of IFR/MVFR stratus returns tonight,
mainly after 06-08z Sun along the coast and between 12-16z Sun
across the Willamette Valley (highest chances in the eastern
Portland Metro). Northerly to northwesterly winds generally 5-10
kt this afternoon with gusts up to 20 kt inland and up to 25 kt
along the coast.

PDX AND APPROACHES...VFR through the TAF period with mostly clear
skies. Northwesterly winds 5-10 kt with gusts up to 20 kt this
afternoon/evening. -Alviz

&&

.MARINE...High pressure over the Pacific will maintain northerly
winds across the waters through the week. Tonight into Sunday,
winds will gradually strengthen from south to north as pressure
gradients tighten. Northerly winds are forecast around 15-20 kt
with gusts to 25-30 kt through at least Sunday night. Therefore,
the current Small Craft Advisories remain in effect from tonight
to Sunday night. The Columbia River Bar was added to the Small
Craft Advisory with this latest forecast, beginning 1400 Sunday to
0500 Monday. High confidence (70-90% chance) that Small Craft
Advisory level winds continue early next week as high pressure
persists.

Wave heights of 5-8 ft at 9-10 seconds through Monday will mainly
be wind-driven with swells generally out of the west. Seas
gradually fall mid-week onward as winds weaken. -Alviz
